CentOS 5, Ubuntu Edgy-Gutsy, Debian Etch — all these Linux distributions are affected. Basically a local user can gain root access, and with help from vulnerable applications that allow executing arbitrary local code, a remote user might be able to take over the entire system.

It is great to see hosts taking security seriously (especially those providing SSH access to shared hosting accounts). Looking at my list of hosting accounts:

• SliceHost — not vulnerable as they run Linux 2.6.16.


• Linode — new kernel images created within 24 hours of security alert.


• VPSLink — can’t find any discussion on their forums. My VPS there was running 2.6.9 so it should be secure, but I heard there are servers running newer 2.6.18 kernels from OpenVZ.


• DreamHost — “What security issue? We are still running 2.4 kernels!”


• NearlyFreeSpeech — “What security issue? FreeBSD ftw!”

A bad bad week for Linux for sure. Time to press that panic button.

Two other sites of mine were down and their IP’s gone.

addresses fixed, several hours afterwards now.

nature, they are quite expensive though compared to the competition and this is

this is free compared to some other hosts which charge for the upgrade to a
Cpanel hosting plan. Also like most other hostgator offers a online chat support
and a toll free number that you can call in case you need assistance in setting
up you�re hosting or trying to pick a plan out that fits your needs. Over all
hostgator would probably be a eight out of ten because they offer a lot of
features but only on their more expensive plans where as most other hosts will
offer the same features on there low end plans, another big turn off is that
they only allow you to host one domain on there cheapest plan, most hosts allow
unlimited or at least fifteen or twenty.

I'm quite happy that is short as this means I haven't had any big problem during
these months. Just 2 things to add to what I wrote in the past:



I've had seldom connectivity problems to our websites, I couldn't always check
if it was hostgator problem or other problem related to my connectivity but
sometimes it really looked like it was hostgator problem.

I'm just talking about few times for some minutes. Not really a problem for us.



The only really annoying thing it happened is that once one of our website
(vagabondo.net) has been discontinued because it loaded too much the server.
Generally speaking suspending a site because is loading too much the server
could even be a positive thing (you prevent the whole server sites to slow down
too much, you can have time to see if someone is "attacking" the server or the
site ecc.). What I'm complaining about is:



1) We received no warning about it, not before, not after the site was
suspended!!! We just realized it, wrote to support and got an answer after few
hours.



2) We received no details about the excessive load the server was experiencing
becasue of our site, no detail about where the problem could lie (too many sql
queries? too many hits? heavy php proccesses? ecc. ecc.) so as to understand
better if this could happen again and possibly how to solve the the problem.



All in all this leaves you with a scary impression: it just happened one time
but it could happen anytime not knowing why it happened (and why it stop
happening!).



Having said that I still think hostgator provide a good service (that needs
improving though) and can confirm what I wrote in previous review.

I read about this on Bert Amijo's blog. 3Tera CEO Vlad Miloushev did the math:

1. Google's infrastructure consists of 500,000 to 1 million servers.

2. Google's Q4, 2006 revenue was $3.2 billion. On an annualized basis, that's $12.8 billion.

If you divide #2 by #1, you'd get $12,800 to $25,600 of revenue per server. If you take the average and divide the amount by 12, you'd end up with $1,422/month in sales for each server. Google spends about 10% of its revenue on operations, which equals $142 per server.

As a point of reference, let's consider HostGator's announcement that it will expand its presence at The Planet. HostGator currently leases 1,700 servers, which are home to 500,000 websites. That's 294 sites per server. If HostGator collected as little as $4.84 from each site owner, it'd generate more revenue per server than Google!

HostGator's cheapest service plan costs $6.95/month, but it allows customers paying $9.95 or more to host multiple sites. Which most - including HostGator's 10,000 resellers - do. So Brent doesn't have Larry and Sergey beat. Yet. But while I was doing the calculations above, I remembered a conversation with Lenkov from SiteKreator. Thanks to some kind of caching magic (which ISP-Planet discusses in this article), Lenkov's software can support up to 30,000 simple websites on a two CPU machine.

Let's say Brent springs for a quad core Clovertown from The Planet, hosts only 15,000 websites, and charges each site owner $1/month. This would put him ahead of Google in terms of both revenue/hosting expense ratio, and sales per server.

ISP-Planet says SiteKreator can be licensed for an "unpublished fee". I'll have to ask Lenkov about that...
